Republican National Convention
At the Republican National Conventions, politicians and power brokers will descend on security-ringed conference centers to jockey for control of their parties, and then campaign for control of this country. Pacifica radio will bring you UNconventional coverage —asking politicians questions they don't get from other media, broadcasting voices from the protests outside, and, of course, bringing our own analysts onto the microphones to dissect the platforms and speeches. Hosted by Mitch Jeseritch, Aimee Allison, and Sonali Kolhatkar; with Larry Bensky and Davey D. The Personal Computer Show was pre-empted.

The Political Psychology of Degradation - a discussion with guests Paul Kahn, author of Sacred Violence: Torture, Terror, and Sovereignty, and Dr. Mark Hovee, author of Wayward Soldier: A Reserve Psychologist's Memoir. Why have advances in international humanitarian law not prevented massive death and harm to civilians? Why is it important to try to understand the underlying structure of American political culture? My goal with this program is to address the political psychology of degradation. Paul Kahn, Professor of Law, challenges us to face the political meaning of violence as well as the ethos of sacrifice that drives American political theology. U.S Army Reserve psychologist Mark Hovee has observed the toll of war on soldiers as well as conducted research on psychological factors associated with Abu Ghraib (dehumanization and how/why it occurs). Hosted by David Occhiuto.

Equal Time for Freethought
Labor Day Weekend Special: Selling the Work Ethic: From Puritan Pulpit to Corporate PR. Barry Seidman marks Labor Day with a discussion of the rhetoric and effects of the so-called Protestant Work Ethic, which has allowed a separation of work from “jobs” in the American mindset. If as humanists we value “the good life,” along with creativity, freedom and the interest in each of us becoming the best we can be, why do so many of us ignore or even encourage a socioeconomic system which deprives so many of these things?
