Eco-logic host, Ken Gale asks what
creates an environmental activist?
For some, it is a love of nature
catalyzed by a specific time or
place or element. Going into nature
to look at trees or birds often,
perhaps inevitably, leads to environmental
activism because the birds or trees
"become friends and neighbors."
Joining him was David Sibley,
who is doing for the next generation
with his nature guides, what Ken
Gale thinks Roger Tory Peterson
did in the 20th century and what
John James Audubon did in the 19th
century. They discussed his books,
of course, particularly his bird
and tree books, butthey also
the craft of doing different types
of nature art, the connection between
bird-watching and environmental
activism and the effect of buildings
on birdpopulations. Buildings
probably kill a billion birds per
year worldwide and every bird killed
saves the lives of hundreds of
insects. Protecting forest and
water for wildlife helps human
health and vice versa. Being in
nature makes protecting it less
abstract and more personal.
