Telling It Like It Is
Stephen The Road Warrior focused on how modern technologies can benefit the people of Haiti as they try to rebuild their lives and devastated nation. Some of these technologies include building an interactive data base which can record information on those known to have died, been injured, survived this crisis, and what their current status may be. Building a virtual map from information provided by residents of the affected areas, which when compiled, will be more accurate than those currently existing on the web. Providing Volunteer technical services which will compliment existing aid organizations' abilities to: a) raise funds; b) input information and up to date status of individuals impacted by disasters; c) utilize My Space, Facebook and other communications technologies, so that impacted individuals can communicate with their loved ones and each other in real time; along with other innovative ways of maximizing aid organizations' abilities to provide services to those affected most.

On this program we talked about my having been back from the Republic of Viet Nam for 40 years. I talked about the army Major who killed soldiers at Fort Hood, and about the psychological stresses caused by war. We also talked about the discovery that there is a lot of water on the Moon, and what this might mean for future exploration of that body. We talked a little bit about the Yankees winning their first World Series of the 21st Century, and about Hideki Matsui's legendary and unabashed porn collection. We also talked about what are still called Ticker Tape Parades and how they largely feature tossed rolls of toilet paper, which just isn't the same. They will probably not rename these events Toilet Paper Parades any time soon though. Pickles of the North talked about her mother's bout with the H1N1 virus. We also talked about the city buying some of the Coney Island holdings of a real estate speculator for too high a price. We talked about the Berlin Wall having been down for 20 years now, and more.

We let everyone know what a great time we had at Uncle Sidney's place for Indigenous People's Day dinner. And I gained four pounds! We talked about the hype around "Cyber Monday," which was when this program aired. For everyone except on-line retailers it's just more advertising designed to get us to buy more junk. I talked about a Treasurer's Report I issued over the past fortnight, and how much of a bother it was to get some open source software to work. I still think that open source software is a very good idea, I just have to learn to use it. We talked about the Web site that invites ordinary people to help scientists examine galaxy collisions and figure out why the universe has the mix of galaxies that it does. We talked about the Large Hadron collider actually getting protons circulating without any multi-ton magnets being ripped from their concrete moorings. We mentioned the breaking news item that, since it has been shown that the half life of a proton cannot be less than 6.6 x 1033 years, proton decay will not be an election issue. We are relieved. We also got through a bunch of the mail.

On this program I talked a little bit about how the Suffolk Country cops broke my nose 38 years ago today when the Gay Activists Alliance went to help some folks file charges against some of those cops. We talked about the WBAI election, which had just ended, and about the faction's attempt to stop it. We alerted everyone to the Geminid meteor shower that was going on during and after the radio program. We talked about various pieces of legislation designed to allow same gender marriage, most failed, one passed. And the first openly lesbian mayor of Houston, Texas was elected just before we went on the air. We talked a little about the Large Hadron Collider finally getting up enough power to become the most powerful particle accelerator ever. We talked about a giant star that exploded because its gamma rays were so energetic they became solid matter. Pickles of the North talked about some science records for kids and the anticipated launch of a satellite which is designed to search for hidden cosmic bodies and events. Pickles and I talked about the number of people not getting flu shots, both seasonal and H1N1, and about the American death toll from H1N1 reaching 10,000. We also told about getting our shots for both kinds of flu.

OFELIA RIVAS of the O’odham Solidarity Project, OANESS PRITZKER talk to us regarding the harassment of Indigenous peoples along the U.S./Mexican border; and the connection of the impediment to the construction of Homeland Security's joint program with the Border Patrol to build a border wall across the entire 330 mile U.S / Mexico border, a 65 mile section of which will run along the southern edge of the Tohono O’odham reservation. This wall will effectively cut in half the traditional territory of the O’odham and serve to isolate O’odham villages that exist on opposite sides of the border. To justify the building of this wall the government has once again used the fear of terrorism, common since 9/11, to advance its interests.

AfrobeatRadio
This week AfrobeatRadio will address the political and security implications for Africa and specifically Nigeria. The panel will consist of African journalists which will include Ajibola Hamzat, Correspondent with Nigeria Guardian Newspaper, in a telephone analysis live from Nigeria. This is an important issue which requires a comprehensive strategic review of the operations of U.S. Intelligence Agencies, its ongoing and broadening operations inside the African continent in its "war against Terrorism."
As the U.S. commits to protecting Americans worldwide, at what cost will it be to Africans at home and abroad? How can effective joint planning as well as assurances that the operations of those countries (in this instance - The U.S.) conducting the operations are acting in accordance with international humanitarian law? These questions and more will be presented, along with suggestions and ways to find solutions from a continental African perspective.
This is a continental African initiative in an attempt at constructive dialogue, to encourage examination of the issues while offering an opportunity for a more responsible and constructive media role. We in Africa, having fought long and hard for our independence and to build a continent in which we see great hope and a bright future cannot now be sent back into those days of western hegemony.

After this show we're taking the rest of the year off! But before the year ended we talked about the grandson of Joseph Stalin suing a Moscow radio station for defaming grandpa Stalin (you can't make this stuff up). We talked about the toxic LSB meeting where faction operatives denied a Staff member her seat on the LSB and generally misbehaved. We were glad to announce that anti-gay bigot and right-winger Oral Roberts had finally died. We talked about the guy who tried to take down an airliner filled with people using a bomb concealed in his underwear, and we wondered how much more draconian the airline searches would now become. We talked about having celebrated Isaac Newton's Birthday on December 25, and going to various parties. We talked about the discovery of a water world orbiting a star about 40 light years away, the water's pressurized surface is a superheated 400° F. We talked about the discovery of other exoplanets. Pickles of the North introduced the listeners to a Web site that features some '50s astronomy songs aimed at children. And we got through a bunch of listener mail.

We spent the first half of this program celebrating the 50th anniversary of WBAI becoming a Pacifica radio station. We had our own Uncle Sidney, whose program Carrier Wave alternates with us in this time slot, on the program with us. We talked about the history of WBAI, with the 99.5 FM frequency starting out as an experimental TV station before World War II, going to an early FM radio station with the call letters WABD and then getting bought by World Broadcast Associates Inc., before millionaire Lewis Schweitzer gave the station to the Pacifica Foundation, and the rest is our history. Yes, the official start date was January 10, 1960, but we figured that we were still within the first 24 hours of WBAI being a Pacifica station. We had the remains of a really great cake on this program, which I shouldn't have eaten, but, hell, it's the 50th anniversary. We talked about a homophobic politician in Uganda proposing a law mandating the death penalty for homosexuallity. He did this after three right wing Christian preachers presented 3 days of anti-gay hate talks there. We talked about some doomsday scares that we don't think are realistic at all, and we got through some of the listener mail.

On this program we of course talked about the huge tragedy of the earthquake in Haiti. We're glad that WBAI participated in the big telethon for Haiti. We talked about some of the details related to the quake including the geology of the region where you have the North American and Caribbean plates variously grinding past and subducting each other, and we noted the fact that Haiti has a pair of geological faults running through it which make for a very complex tectonic situation. The fault that generated the earthquake may have also set the stage for another earthquake in the north of Haiti or in the Dominican Republic. We talked about the lack of enforced building codes contributing to the death and destruction. After all of the rescues are over there will be a long term recovery effort required. We talked about the planet Mars a little bit, and some new claims regarding micro-fossils there. We talked about the recent Supreme Court ruling that allows corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money on partisan political campaigns, we wondered how foreign corporations would react to this opportunity to control the U.S. government. And we talked about the Chinese government shutting down a gay event there. We talked about how insecure many people's passwords are and gave advice on creating better passwords. We also let everyone know that we'll be pitching on our next program!

The show ran from 7pm to 11pm. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Prophetic Voice Heralding the Challenges Before Us and a Path Forward. No stone monuments or pious resolutions adequately commemorate Dr. King, but rather our recognition of him will be in our resolve to carry on his legacy of resistance to bigotry, poverty, and war. And, our recognition of what Dr. King represented will strengthen and guide us now, in our support of the heroic Haitian people to survive, to emerge from under the fault-line of cataclysmic imperialist rubble. Haiti's status as the poorest nation in the hemisphere has been mentioned time and again by journalists covering the current catastrophe, but where were journalists before the earthquake hit? And how are they doing in explaining the larger context of how Haiti got to this point? We'll talk to Bill Fletcher, former president of TransAfrica Forum and executive editor of The Black Commentator.
Also on the show: Charles Overby is CEO of the Freedom Forum, a foundation ostensibly dedicated to principles of free speech and a free press. He's also a director and shareholder of the Corrections Corporation of America, the largest private jailer in the country. In both roles, Overby engages the public's right to know... but not in the same way. We'll get that story from journalist Beau Hodai.

Corporate media chatter about the Republican Senate victory in Massachusetts reflects participants’ priorities: which means you're unlikely to hear advice offered to Democrats other than that they should act more like Republicans. Is that the takeaway? We'll get another angle from journalist and activist Norman Solomon.
Also on the show: Anonymous news sources are a journalistic scourge, abetting some of the worst policies of our times, and allowing the powerful to escape accountability. But are they simply an occasional problem in reporting, or central to the way corporate journalism operates? We'll talk to Salon's Glenn Greenwald about his report on the subject, The Fundamental Unreliability of America’s Media.

Exploding toilets. Exploding wells. Contaminated drinking water. This is what has happened in other states that have allowed Halliburton's hydraulic fracturing process to reach natural gas deposits in shale. Chesapeake Energy Corporation put out a press release on Oct. 28 stating they won't drill in New York City's watershed. What does that really mean? What about the other companies that are taking out drilling leases? What about the rest of the state? Why is the governor allowing these leases? What about other dangers to the water supplies? What about the already-contaminated water in Pennsylvania and other states? We already do without the gas. We cannot do without the water.

Presidentialism, Predator Drones and the Obama Doctrine - a live radio conversation with Bruce Gagnon, author of "Come Together Right Now: Organizing Stories from a Fading Empire", and (if available at air time) David Swanson, author of "Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union"; hosted by David Occhiuto. Can the 'Obama Doctrine' fulfill real human needs, provide for true security, and respond to regional and global calls for social justice? Is it possible to make progress when criminal former heads of state remain free from, and untroubled by, legally required criminal prosecutions? What long-term effect will the current administration's master narrative have on the hearts and minds of the American people? Will the normalization of atrocity-production be challenged by an effective popular movement of morally defensible and politically viable counter-power? Will smooth, glossy, eloquent militarism lead to peace or pacification?

We're at the end of a yearly holiday cycle for many religions, reminding us that there is a natural cycle of transformation in our environment that affects human beings and that human beings affect. Nature-based religions train people to be mindful of this situation and to participate in it in an enlightened, non-harmful way.

The show focused on various re-use movements. Environmentally-speaking, re-using is even better than re-cycling and throughout the country people are re-using and re-distributing literally tons of things (from food to toys to electronics to furniture to pets) that would otherwise have ended up rotting in a landfill.

Naturalistic Holiday Special!
NOTE: The show started 30 minutes early
The holiday season is officially here and though many non-believers might spin an index finger and mutter “Well, whoopty do!” the period from Thanksgiving to Christmas need not be problematic for people who don’t believe in Jesus, nor need it be joyless for people who do not believe in god at all.
During this one hour special we offered a naturalistic take on the holidays - and we explained how those who are secular may want to celebrate the holidays for the significant benefits they have to offer.
We asked listeners what they are grateful for in their lives. For the bottom half of the hour, we talked about the upcoming weeks and ideas for having a Naturalistic Christmas Day. And while not everyone’s response will be to run out, get a flu shot, and go visit a Santa (probably a good thing) - you may find the holidays just a little more fun.

Sunsara Taylor chats with Robert Jensen. Robert Jensen is that rare form of “Christian Atheist” who, once having been a secularist pure, now finds himself embracing a radical leftist form of "Christianity" which he talks about in his new book, All My Bones Shake: Seeking a Progressive Path to the Prophetic Voice. Jensen is also an advocate of Feminism, and has written harshly on the Porn Industry in the United States. He also may be known for his critical essay - No Thanks to Thanksgiving - where he suggests that a moral people would abandon this holiday built upon myth and the blood of hundreds and thousands of Native Americans. Robert is a professor in the School of Journalism and director of the Senior Fellows Honors Program of the College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin. www.equaltimeforfreethought.org

Humanistic Psychology with Dr. Edward Neukrug What is Humanistic Psychology? Does it fit the parameters of secular humanism and scientific naturalism? What is the legacy of some of its star names like Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow? What does Humanistic Psychology say about Free Will and Human Nature? Arnell Dowret will explore these questions and more with Dr. Edward Neukrug, Professor of Counseling and Human Service at Old Dominion University in Virginia. Dr. Neukrug is also the author of numerous books on psychology and counseling including Counseling Theory and Practice, Theory, Practice and Trends in Human Services: An Introduction to An Emerging Profession, Skills and Tools for Today’s Counselor’s and Psychotherapists, and Essentials of Testing and Assessment for Counselors, Social Workers, and Psychologists.

Naturalistic Symbols and Myths ... Are they desirable? Are they possible? Are they needed? Throughout human history attitudes, ideas, practices, and traditions regarding the "big stuff," such as our relationship to the Cosmos - what it means to be alive - and how we should think about ourselves and our fellow humans, have been conveyed through mostly nonintellectual means such as religious practice and culture. Today, naturalism offers humanity the most accurate and effective way to approach such questions but to date, proponents of naturalism haven't found a nonintellectual approach to convey naturalistic knowledge and wisdom. This Sunday we'll consider whether a naturalistic understanding of ourselves, and the world, can be spread through nonintellectual means; and if so, what such a nonintellectual approach would look like. Joining us will be the organizer of the New York Mythology Cafe which is also The New York Chapter of the Joseph Campbell Foundation Mythical Round Table, Phil Robinson.

Equal Time for Freethought
This special ONE-HOUR Equal Time for Freethought aired from 6pm to 7pm.
Humanism: According to the two documents which outline this philosophy, the Humanist Manefesto’s I & II, the goal of humanism is “a free and universal society in which people voluntarily and intelligently cooperate for the common good. (A belief) in maximum individual autonomy consonant with social responsibility. (And that) alienating forces should be modified or eradicated and bureaucratic structures should be held to a minimum (because) people are more important than decalogues, rules, proscriptions, or regulations.” How close are we to attaining these goals in today’s America? Has capitalism and Jeffersonian democracy (as weak as they may be here in 2009), been able to realize some of these goals? Any of these goals? Or have these ideologies led to a society profoundly unable to become free, and indeed – against human nature itself – have found ways through propaganda and brute force to ensure such freedom never exists? We talked with author Kristian Williams about these questions, focusing on one of the key methods by which the nations elite “regulate” freedom… the Police.

Humanism Vs. Atheism? With the advent of the "New Atheists" and their amazing popularity, and the watering down of humanism by many organizations in the US, we wonder what is the difference between humanism and atheism? Is atheism the foundational core of humanism as many "secular" humanists argue? Can anyone self-identified as an atheist be called a humanist? If humanism is, as some state, an ethical worldview, why do many argue that people can hold any political position and still be a humanist? Matthew LaClair will host a special call-in show to have YOU address these questions!

The eyes of the world are still on Haiti and hearts everywhere are aching. Aid and volunteers have poured in from around the world. And yet, the U.S.’s 12,000 troops have taken over Haiti’s main airport and are turning back much of this aid. An estimated 20,000 people a day died this past week under the rubble for lack of rescue. Surgeries and amputations among survivors were carried out without anesthesia or electricity.
This week, Sunsara Taylor and her guests will dig into the real history of Haiti, the dangerous and influential role of fundamentalists like Robertson, and shine a spotlight on the people who are not falling down on their knees and praising god, but waging active resistance both in Haiti and in the U.S. to demand humanitarian aid be let through.
Meanwhile, we are told – through the mainstream media over and over again – of the stories of worship and praise throughout Haiti. It is almost as if we are supposed to believe their suffering is not so great because of their faith. At the same time, Christian fascist Pat Robertson blamed the history of Haitians, who waged the only successful slave revolution in history, for bringing a curse down on themselves and causing their own suffering. As widely denounced as Robertson was, his voice was still treated as legitimate and promoted throughout the mainstream media.

Blige, Shakira and Sting, while the Los Angeles show will feature performances from Keys, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews, John Legend, Timberlake, Stevie Wonder and Taylor Swift.

Host Scott Sommer will by joined by Chris Kui and Richard Lee of Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) for a discussion about the problem of landlords who neglect building repairs to the point that tenants are vacated by order of the Buildings Department. A number of such cases have occurred this past year in Chinatown and other parts of lower Manhattan. Landlords often stand to gain when their negligence leads to a vacate order, as that may result in the permanent displacement of rent-regulated tenants.
