Dahoud Andre and Miriam Neptune Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees - speak regarding the relief efforts being denied by the U.S militarization in Haiti.
Joseph Brings Plenty- Cheyenne River (Lakota) Sioux Tribe- Chairman on the declared "disaster area" by the Governor Rounds of South Dakota - during the third of major ice and snowstorms that has devasted the CRSTs since early Dec. 2009. The noticeable effect of an "emergency" would be relief efforts by the Red Cross or Federal Emergency Management Agency, until this date 1-28-10 "FEMA has not shown up on Cheyenne River and what Red Cross aid there is for Natives on this reservation is sparse at best". The National Guard is assisting with restoring power and water resources but with 10-21 days. Meanwhile, subzero temperatures, no water, no gasoline, no stores or businesses, no schools and no power keep services inadequate for most of the members on and near the Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Sioux Reservations. 7:30am: THE GREENING OF THE GHETTO: QUEENS - PART 3. Queens is the most ethnically diverse borough in the US, where the Number 7 train is known as The Oriental Express due to the number of Asian nations crossed when riding it. How green is Queens? Tune into Wake Up Call, for Part 3 of the Greening of the Ghetto, where we travel through each of New York's borough to see just how green it is. As the government pushes the power of the green economy, we go on the ground and follow the money trail, we ask where the green jobs are, explore how much job training is being done, by whom and where and we challenge the elected officials about their green support of their borough. New York City Comptroller John Liu, Councilmember Daniel Dromm, Representative for District 25, Jackson Heights, and Len Maniace of The Green Agenda for Jackson Heights take up the discussion. Hosted by Esther Armah.

The show focused on various re-use movements. Environmentally-speaking, re-using is even better than re-cycling and throughout the country people are re-using and re-distributing literally tons of things (from food to toys to electronics to furniture to pets) that would otherwise have ended up rotting in a landfill.

Trish Spoto and Naomi Brussel start the show by interviewing the always incisive Sharon Stapel (Executive Director of the Anti-Violence Project) about queer domestic violence (prompted by the murder of John Lea). Both Trish and Naomi bring their expertise as experienced social workers to the conversation about issues that many queer folks are hesitant to discuss openly. Listen to this segment separately here. Beginning 18 minutes into the show, Naomi interviews Scott Long, director of the LGBT Rights division of Human Rights Watch, about the latest developments on the so-called kill-the-gays bill in Uganda. He also moves beyond this bill to discuss how it fits into the larger context in Uganda, from the influence of American evangelicals in so many aspects of everyday Ugandan life, to the overall economic, political and historical situation in this struggling, landlocked country. Finally, in the second half of the show, Naomi and Trish chat with Jamaican documentary filmmaker Selena Blake about her new film on homophobia in Jamaica. We also gave away a pair of free tickets to the hilarious show Avenue Q.

Telling It Like It Is
Stephen The Road Warrior focused on how modern technologies can benefit the people of Haiti as they try to rebuild their lives and devastated nation. Some of these technologies include building an interactive data base which can record information on those known to have died, been injured, survived this crisis, and what their current status may be. Building a virtual map from information provided by residents of the affected areas, which when compiled, will be more accurate than those currently existing on the web. Providing Volunteer technical services which will compliment existing aid organizations' abilities to: a) raise funds; b) input information and up to date status of individuals impacted by disasters; c) utilize My Space, Facebook and other communications technologies, so that impacted individuals can communicate with their loved ones and each other in real time; along with other innovative ways of maximizing aid organizations' abilities to provide services to those affected most.

Back of the Book
On this program we of course talked about the huge tragedy of the earthquake in Haiti. We're glad that WBAI participated in the big telethon for Haiti. We talked about some of the details related to the quake including the geology of the region where you have the North American and Caribbean plates variously grinding past and subducting each other, and we noted the fact that Haiti has a pair of geological faults running through it which make for a very complex tectonic situation. The fault that generated the earthquake may have also set the stage for another earthquake in the north of Haiti or in the Dominican Republic. We talked about the lack of enforced building codes contributing to the death and destruction. After all of the rescues are over there will be a long term recovery effort required. We talked about the planet Mars a little bit, and some new claims regarding micro-fossils there. We talked about the recent Supreme Court ruling that allows corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money on partisan political campaigns, we wondered how foreign corporations would react to this opportunity to control the U.S. government. And we talked about the Chinese government shutting down a gay event there. We talked about how insecure many people's passwords are and gave advice on creating better passwords. We also let everyone know that we'll be pitching on our next program!

Equal Time for Freethought
The eyes of the world are still on Haiti and hearts everywhere are aching. Aid and volunteers have poured in from around the world. And yet, the U.S.’s 12,000 troops have taken over Haiti’s main airport and are turning back much of this aid. An estimated 20,000 people a day died this past week under the rubble for lack of rescue. Surgeries and amputations among survivors were carried out without anesthesia or electricity.
This week, Sunsara Taylor and her guests will dig into the real history of Haiti, the dangerous and influential role of fundamentalists like Robertson, and shine a spotlight on the people who are not falling down on their knees and praising god, but waging active resistance both in Haiti and in the U.S. to demand humanitarian aid be let through.
Meanwhile, we are told – through the mainstream media over and over again – of the stories of worship and praise throughout Haiti. It is almost as if we are supposed to believe their suffering is not so great because of their faith. At the same time, Christian fascist Pat Robertson blamed the history of Haitians, who waged the only successful slave revolution in history, for bringing a curse down on themselves and causing their own suffering. As widely denounced as Robertson was, his voice was still treated as legitimate and promoted throughout the mainstream media.

Corporate media chatter about the Republican Senate victory in Massachusetts reflects participants’ priorities: which means you're unlikely to hear advice offered to Democrats other than that they should act more like Republicans. Is that the takeaway? We'll get another angle from journalist and activist Norman Solomon.
Also on the show: Anonymous news sources are a journalistic scourge, abetting some of the worst policies of our times, and allowing the powerful to escape accountability. But are they simply an occasional problem in reporting, or central to the way corporate journalism operates? We'll talk to Salon's Glenn Greenwald about his report on the subject, The Fundamental Unreliability of America’s Media.

Basem Khader Gaza Blockade Electronicintifada.net
Continues to Suffocate Daily Life more than 1.4 million Palestinians cut off from the outside world and struggling with desperate poverty. The blockade does not target armed groups but rather punishes Gaza’s entire population by restricting the entry of food, medical supplies, educational equipment and building materials. An estimated 280 of the 641 schools in Gaza were damaged and 18 were destroyed. More than half of Gaza’s population is under the age of 18 and the disruption to their education is having a devastating impact. Hospitals have also been badly affected by the military offensive and the blockade. Trucks of medical aid provided by the World Health Organization have been repeatedly refused entry to Gaza without explanation by Israeli officials.

Wakeup Call
7:30am: Haiti through the lens of the media. Via mainstream (NBC, CNN, ABC), via Al Jazeera's critical global perspective, from an indigenous Haitian perspective and from a far right view; our all women media panel focuses on the shaping of Haiti via the stories, tone, language and visual depiction in the aftermath of disaster. Are we watching the criminalization of a people who need aid? Is the US military being cast as savior as the American people are seduced using powerful image and language as the US orchestrates a military takeover?

Sharp analysis and scathing criticism from special guest panelist MARGUERITE LAURENT, President of the Haitian Lawyers Leadership Network, a Haitian writer who produces a daily eblast on Haiti. She joins regulars APRIL SILVER, Founder and President of Akila Worksongs, STACEY PATTON, Senior Writer and Editor of The Defenders Online, the blog of the NAACP's legal defense fund and BHAKTI SHRINGAPURE, Professor Hunter College, and specialist on Postcolonial African Literature, South Asia, Gender.

And, our recognition of what Dr. King represented will strengthen and guide us now, in our support of the heroic Haitian people to survive, to emerge from under the fault-line of cataclysmic imperialist rubble. Haiti's status as the poorest nation in the hemisphere has been mentioned time and again by journalists covering the current catastrophe, but where were journalists before the earthquake hit? And how are they doing in explaining the larger context of how Haiti got to this point? We'll talk to Bill Fletcher, former president of TransAfrica Forum and executive editor of The Black Commentator.
Also on the show: Charles Overby is CEO of the Freedom Forum, a foundation ostensibly dedicated to principles of free speech and a free press. He's also a director and shareholder of the Corrections Corporation of America, the largest private jailer in the country. In both roles, Overby engages the public's right to know... but not in the same way. We'll get that story from journalist Beau Hodai.

Back of the Book
We spent the first half of this program celebrating the 50th anniversary of WBAI becoming a Pacifica radio station. We had our own Uncle Sidney, whose program Carrier Wave alternates with us in this time slot, on the program with us. We talked about the history of WBAI, with the 99.5 FM frequency starting out as an experimental TV station before World War II, going to an early FM radio station with the call letters WABF and then getting bought by World Broadcast Associates Inc., before millionaire Lewis Schweitzer gave the station to the Pacifica Foundation, and the rest is our history. Yes, the official start date was January 10, 1960, but we figured that we were still within the first 24 hours of WBAI being a Pacifica station. We had the remains of a really great cake on this program, which I shouldn't have eaten, but, hell, it's the 50th anniversary. We talked about a homophobic politician in Uganda proposing a law mandating the death penalty for homosexuality. He did this after three right wing Christian preachers from America presented 3 days of anti-gay hate talks there. We talked about some doomsday scares that we don't think are realistic at all, and we got through some of the listener mail.

AfrobeatRadio
This week AfrobeatRadio will address the political and security implications for Africa and specifically Nigeria. The panel will consist of African journalists which will include Ajibola Hamzat, Correspondent with Nigeria Guardian Newspaper, in a telephone analysis live from Nigeria. This is an important issue which requires a comprehensive strategic review of the operations of U.S. Intelligence Agencies, its ongoing and broadening operations inside the African continent in its "war against Terrorism."
As the U.S. commits to protecting Americans worldwide, at what cost will it be to Africans at home and abroad? How can effective joint planning as well as assurances that the operations of those countries (in this instance - The U.S.) conducting the operations are acting in accordance with international humanitarian law? These questions and more will be presented, along with suggestions and ways to find solutions from a continental African perspective.
This is a continental African initiative in an attempt at constructive dialogue, to encourage examination of the issues while offering an opportunity for a more responsible and constructive media role. We in Africa, having fought long and hard for our independence and to build a continent in which we see great hope and a bright future cannot now be sent back into those days of western hegemony.

Back of the Book
We spent the first half of this program celebrating the 50th anniversary of WBAI becoming a Pacifica radio station. We had our own Uncle Sidney, whose program Carrier Wave alternates with us in this time slot, on the program with us. We talked about the history of WBAI, with the 99.5 FM frequency starting out as an experimental TV station before World War II, going to an early FM radio station with the call letters WABD and then getting bought by World Broadcast Associates Inc., before millionaire Lewis Schweitzer gave the station to the Pacifica Foundation, and the rest is our history. Yes, the official start date was January 10, 1960, but we figured that we were still within the first 24 hours of WBAI being a Pacifica station. We had the remains of a really great cake on this program, which I shouldn't have eaten, but, hell, it's the 50th anniversary. We talked about a homophobic politician in Uganda proposing a law mandating the death penalty for homosexuallity. He did this after three right wing Christian preachers presented 3 days of anti-gay hate talks there. We talked about some doomsday scares that we don't think are realistic at all, and we got through some of the listener mail.

Equal Time for Freethought
Humanism Vs. Atheism? With the advent of the "New Atheists" and their amazing popularity, and the watering down of humanism by many organizations in the US, we wonder what is the difference between humanism and atheism? Is atheism the foundational core of humanism as many "secular" humanists argue? Can anyone self-identified as an atheist be called a humanist? If humanism is, as some state, an ethical worldview, why do many argue that people can hold any political position and still be a humanist? Matthew LaClair will host a special call-in show to have YOU address these questions!
