Equal Time for Freethought
Merchants of Doubt: When Scientists Lie
Science is most likely our best way of knowing and navigating our universe. It is a self-correcting method by which bias is filtered through research, experimentation, and via objective means so that we can get as close to “truth” as any human endeavor might. But science is also a human construct, so it can’t help being influenced by not only our own human brains, but by the cultures our species develop in which science operates. And while science is our best method of separating human bias from fact, there can often seem to be a very thin line between each of these. More...

Back of the Book
We came in on a snow storm for this program.

We let everyone know that we're pitching on our next program in two weeks. Please pledge then. If you only listen to the program on the archives then please consider sending in a check or money order well before the program will air.

We talked about the pieces of legislation called SOPA or PIPA which purport to be about protecting intellectual property. In reality they are a way of just destroying communications on the Internet, unless you're some huge company, of course. We talked about the tactic of blacking out Web sites for a day to protest these bills. “Blacking out” has different meanings for different people, we noted that along with Google and Wikipedia the Pacifica Foundation, and even glib.com, did some form of blacking out their sites.

Pickles of the North and I talked about celebrating our wedding and “getting together” anniversaries this past fortnight. I also talked about what will have to be my final plate of pancakes after I got all hyperglycemic from eating it.

We noted that the Iranian police are going around forcing stores to stop selling Barbie dolls, which are banned by the theocrats in charge of Iran.

We also noted that Police Commissioner Ray Kelly announced this past week that the NYPD is experimenting with new technology that will look through people's clothing to see if they're carrying guns. If they really bring this technology to the streets it will surely be abused by the police as they ogle women and perform surreptitious searches of people who are just walking by minding their own business. It looks like 1984 is coming a little late, but it's getting here with a vengeance. Winston Smith never had to contend with things like this!

We spent part of this program diving into our backlog of mail from listeners. Thanks to everyone who wrote in.

DR, ROBERTO RODRIQUEZ - Tuscon, Arizona - drcintli.blogspot.com While TUCSON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT claims that there are no banned books, the fact remains that administrators have come into Mexican American Studies classrooms (which no longer exist) and removed the MAS classroom materials, which includes books that were formerly utilized in the now suspended MAS program. While TUSD claims that only 7 book titles were ordered boxed and carried off, the fact is that the confiscation, in some cases in front of the students, involved more than the 7 books that were listed by TUSD. 50 books (listed at the end of the Cambium report) are not banned, they are confiscated, or in the process of being confiscated... THUS THE BOOKS ARE NOW UNDOCUMENTED! They are as welcome in TUSD schools as undocumented migrants are welcome in this country.

Hollywood is big business. Film budgets can go as high as $200 million dollars... and counting. How are these films made and who gets to tell the stories? In a recent article film maker George Lucas decried Hollywood for it's apparent unwillingness to support his latest film Red Tails because the main cast are black actors. Lucas had to self-fund the film about African American pilots (The Tuskegee Airmen) as he was unable to get any studio to back it. Spike Lee has to take his new project to Sundance because no one in Hollywood would finance or distribute the film.
Hosted by Michael G. Haskins. Filmmaker and former co-host Tanya Steele discussed her graduate film work at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, as well as her own award-winning work and tales of navigating the 'film industry' as a female black filmmaker.

Housing Notebook
Continued from 7:00 PM. A Prophetic Messenger Still To Follow A Building Bridges and Housing Notebook Special No stone monuments or pious resolutions adequately commemorate Dr. King, but rather our recognition of him will be in our resolve to carry on his legacy of resistance to bigotry, wealth inequality, and militarism. In this period of economic woe for workers and as more people are reduced to grinding and unrelenting poverty, its important to recall Dr. King’s struggle for the rights of public sector workers, the Memphis Sanitation workers, to form a union. This was part of his campaign to battle poverty, to organize a Poor People’s March, focusing on building a movement for economic justice - which he saw as the next step for human rights. We still have much to learn from the lessons Dr. King was preaching during his last campaigns.

Democracy Now!
A special on Dr. Martin Luther King - in his own words. While Dr. King is primarily remembered as a civil rights leader, he also championed the cause of the poor and organized the Poor People’s Campaign to address issues of economic justice. Dr. King was also a fierce critic of U.S. foreign policy and the Vietnam War. We play his “Beyond Vietnam” speech, which he delivered at New York Citys’s Riverside Church on April 4, 1967, as well as his last speech, “I Have Been to the Mountain Top,” that he gave on April 3, 1968, the night before he was assassinated.

Equal Time for Freethought
Santa Claus, Myth, Magic and Poetry. No small factor in making naturalism as effective as it is, has to do with the very specific and detailed way that information and ideas are expressed. Clearly its more useful to distinguish between a person who may be experiencing clinical depression, and one who is sad about a recent loss of a family member, as opposed to using far more nebulous terms like melancholy to describe them both. At the same time however, might it be possible that communicating in primarily literal and specific terms has considerable limitations?
Is there something about the symbolism common to poetry and myth that is essential to convey aspects of reality that are missed by more specific and prosaic expression? And if so, what might a mythical naturalistic character look like?
Case in point: on this past Christmas Day Equal Time for Freethought played part of its most recent interview with mythical icon, Santa Claus. For the beginning half hour of this program we will play, for the first time ever, the new Santa interview in its entirety. During the second half hour we will take your calls to get your ideas on the question of finding the right balance between poetry and prose, and myth and reality. Eco-logic
There is a new bill in the NY state legislature called the solar jobs bill. However, they can name these bills whatever they want. A group of environmental activists heard a panel discussion of the bill that gave the impression that the bill is very limited and perhaps even designed to slow the growth of the solar industry by "Wall Street-ifying" it. We decided to have our own panel discussion on Thursday, January 19th, 7-9 PM at the Community Church at 35th Street between Park & Madison Ave.
Three of the four panelists will be on the show: Anthony Pereira of altPOWER, Inc., John Siciliani of JFS Renewables LLC, and Megan Matson, co-founder and Strategy & Policy Director for LEAN Energy US, a new organization out of California (the #1 solar state). John and Anthony are both past presidents of the New York Solar Energy Industry Association and long-time solar panel installers and have been on Eco-Logic before. They are great at linking policy and business issues and cutting through the jargon. We'll discuss the bill, how good it really is and how it could be made better. What is a "Solar Renewable Energy Credit"? What is "Feed In Tariff"? The final wording of the bill can still be changed; there is still time for voter input. Your input.

Back of the Book
Of course this was our first radio program of the new year.

I talked about finally reading The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner. The novel had been an assignment for my English class in my first semester at college. Just as I got to the point where I was to read Faulkner's novel my appendix decided to secede from my Union. So I spent a couple of weeks in the hospital and more weeks recuperating at home. That was it for my English class, among other things. So I have wanted to read the book for years, and late last year I finally got back to it. I talked about finally finishing reading it yesterday, after 46 years. I also talked about my (former) appendix.

I speculated on the new dictator of North Korea possibly being in a position he never wanted. What if Kim Jung-un was quite content being a chubby leech on the starving populace of North Korea? Now that he's been thrust into the "leadership" of that nation state we may be seeing Kim Jung-un playing out a starring role in Ferris Bueller's Days as a dynastic communist dictator.

We talked about some cardboard and tape that's on the sidewalk west of WBAI's portion of Wall St. We think that the Powers That Be are going to install a fence along the entire sidewalk from Broadway to just short of Pearl St. Wow, a little bit of protest and they get so touchy.

I talked about a piece in the latest Scientific American which told of a coalition calling itself Digital Due Process that's trying to get the best Congress that money can buy to update the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 to require that the various government agencies that currently demand and get information on our Web searches, on-line activities, cell phone usage, cell phone location and other information be required to get a warrant for it henceforth. I predict resistance.

We talked about the United States Navy rescuing an Iranian boat from Somali pirates days after Iran made threats against one of the Navy's aircraft carriers.

There was bad news and good news regarding civil rights. The Catholic Church is setting up a group to "counsel" gay and lesbian Catholics to keep them from having any sex that the Pope doesn't approve of, meanwhile Hawaii and Delaware have enacted domestic partnership legislation.

We also talked about Lynn Samuels who passed away right after our last program. Lynn was a fellow producer here at WBAI and she was also a friend of mine. And she liked Pickles of the North when she met her. So we talked about Lynn a bit, and we do so miss her now.

Howard interviews Julio Pabon representing "Boricuas For A Positive Image". Pabon is part of a coalition effort to hold WABC-TV accountable for racist and stereotypical remarks made by one of the leads on the new sitcom, “Work it,” who said the line “I’m Puerto Rican, I would be great at selling drugs.” The comment is part of a tortured history of media racism against Latinos which includes Fort Apache, the Bronx, Oliver Stone's Wall Street which originally had a scene in which Puerto Ricans were compared to cockroaches, the character of Kramer in Seinfeld stomping the Puerto Rican flag during the Puerto Rican parade, among others. Haiti: The Struggle Continues
Two years since a 7.0 strength earthquake shook Haiti at 4:53 pm, on January 12, 2010, shattering the already fragile lives of its population, we note that the majority of Haitians have not seen a significant benefit from the outpouring of donations by individuals and promises by governments.
"Where did the money go?" Professor Bill Quigley joins us to provide some answers as well as historian Laurent Dubois, whose latest book, The Aftershocks of History, recounts Haiti's struggle to stay free in the 208 years since it became the first independent African country in the West.

Equal Time for Freethought
The “Abortion Wars” Now Include Birth Control! Thirty-nine years after women won the right to abortion, this fundamental right is hanging by a thread. 2011 saw the greatest number of restrictions passed on womens access to abortion ever – and now, more than 90% of counties don’t have abortion providers, millions of women face unnecessary and humiliating legal restrictions to access, doctors who provide this service are hunted and terrorized and women who get abortions are stigmatized and shamed.
But that is not all. Now, even birth control is under siege. Pharmacists refuse to fill prescriptions. “Personhood” amendments seek to criminalize miscarriages and ban all contraception. And President Obama openly upheld Kathleen Sebelius’s unprecedented decision to overrule the FDA to ban the over-the-counter distribution of Plan B (emergency contraception).
Join Sunsara Taylor as she convenes a round-table of experts and commentators to look back at the past year in the battle over women’s right to birth control and abortion… and, to look ahead to the battles to come. More...

First Voices Indigenous Radio
DEMELZA CHAMPAGNE, JOHN FREISEN, JAKE LITTLE, JEREME AMOUAK and FARREL

- NEW YORK - All join in a discussion about the current "Occupation" movement and the use of language. "To most, the irony of a progressive social movement using the term "occupy" to reshape how Americans think about issues of democracy and equality has been clear. After all, it is generally nations, armies and police who occupy, usually by force. And in this, the United States has been a leader. The American government is just now after nine years ending its overt occupation of Iraq, is still entrenched in Afghanistan and is maintaining troops on the ground in dozens of countries worldwide. All this is not to obscure the fact that the United States as we know it came into being by way of an occupation a gradual and devastatingly violent one that all but extinguished entire Native American populations across thousands of miles of land." "In this sense, Occupy Wall Street has occupied language, has made "occupy" its own. And, importantly, people from diverse ethnicities, cultures and languages have participated in this linguistic occupation it is distinct from the history of forcible occupation in that it is built to accommodate all, not just the most powerful or violent." "Occupy Language might draw inspiration from both the way that the Occupy movement has reshaped definitions of "occupy," which teaches us that we give words meaning and that discourses are not immutable, and from the way indigenous movements have contested its use, which teaches us to be ever-mindful about how language both empowers and oppresses, unifies and isolates." "By occupying language, we can expose how educational, political, and social institutions use language to further marginalize oppressed groups; resist colonizing language practices that elevate certain languages over others; resist attempts to define people with terms rooted in negative stereotypes; and begin to reshape the public discourse about our communities, and about the central role of language in racism and discrimination." excerpts from H. Samy Alin's article What If We Occupied The Language?
